Can traditional definitions of masculinity serve as barriers for Black men in recognizing and seeking the support they need? In this roundtable discussion, participants will explore the intersections of masculinity, vulnerability, and help-seeking behaviors among Black men. This session will examine the obstacles Black men face regarding emotional awareness and accessing support, providing an opportunity to redefine masculinity in a more expansive and empowering way. Participants will discuss strategies for fostering a healthier self-concept and explore how Black men can thrive in environments that promote support, understanding, and empowerment.
Presenter: Charles E. Gee, MEd
Charles is a Licensed Professional Counselor and mental health advocate based in Dallas, Texas. He holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. Charles has dedicated his career to supporting historically excluded and underserved populations. Trained in EMDR, he works with clients to process significant trauma, focusing particularly on men of diverse backgrounds, including those who identify as Queer, Black, Latinx, or at the intersection of these identities. After transitioning from a career in Higher Education, Charles founded his private practice, Cardinal Collective, rooted in the belief that growth and healing are possible through supportive community. As a clinician, he prioritizes creating a safe and supportive environment for his clients to navigate life’s challenges. In addition to his client work, Charles facilitates mental health and wellness workshops for various organizations. In his personal time, he enjoys exploring new cuisines, paddleboarding, roller skating, and spending quality time with friends and family.
