Maternal Depression: Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Title:
Maternal Depression: Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Presenter(s)/Author(s):
Abigail Palmer Molina, PhD; Lawrence Palinkas, PhD; Yuliana Hernandez; Iliana Garcia; Scott Stuart, MD; Todd Susna, PhD; and Ferol E. Mennen, PhD
Description:
Rates of maternal depression in the US are higher among low-income mothers and mothers of ethnic and racial minority backgrounds, who also experience more significant difficulties accessing high-quality mental health treatment (Molina et al., 2023). However, as indicated by Molina et al. (2023), few studies have examined the utility of gold-standard depression treatments like group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) with this population. This CE is based on the first study to explore the perspectives of a majority Latina low-income sample participating in any IPT modality. Counselors will learn about the mothers' experiences participating in group IPT, the factors that may help explain differences in treatment outcomes and implications for counseling practice.
Learning Objectives:
1.Understand low-income, minoritized mothers’ experiences of participating in group interpersonal psychotherapy.
2.Know factors that may help explain differences in treatment outcomes.
3.Recognize implications for counseling practice.
