Description: Counselor students and practitioners who want to own a private practice or those counselors who already own one would benefit from learning the legal and ethical aspects of managing a counseling practice. Practical issues such as liability for different types of business structures and professional liability insurance within the context of professional practice are explained. The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) is discussed. Registrants will learn about the increased liability risk of sharing offices and overhead expenses and what counselors can do to minimize those risks, as well as what to consider when closing a counseling practice. Moreover, the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), non-compete clauses, and the Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (GINA) of 2008 are also discussed.
Those who register for this Professional Development will have access to a Journal of Counseling and Development (JCD) article on the marketing of professional counselors. Counselors will learn clear and actionable recommendations to develop effective marketing practices while understanding the public preferences for counseling credentials and reducing barriers to mental health care.
