Learning Objectives:
  • Participants will leave the presentation with increased understanding of the importance of directly addressing grief in the school setting, the connection between grief and trauma, and strategies available to support grieving students.
  • Participants will leave the presentation with a better understanding and confidence to effectively implement and run a grief group for students.
  • Participants will leave the presentation with creative interventions to use in helping students who are experiencing grief.
  • Attendees will experience the first overarching dimension of cultural competence as it relates to gender differences in bullying experiences and reactions for high school students: understanding one's own assumptions, values, and biases through self-evaluation and personal assessment.
  • Attendees will be exposed to the second overarching dimension of cultural competence as it relates to gender differences in bullying experiences and reactions in high school students: understanding the worldviews of culturally different clients through listening to their stories and experiencing their cultures.
  • Attendees will discuss the third overarching dimension of cultural competence as it relates to gender differences in bullying experiences and reactions in high school students: developing culturally sensitive appropriate and effective methods for each client and his/her individual needs based on context.
  • Explain short and long-term strategies to sustain antiracism efforts
  • Understand the costs of being antiracist and the strategies to respond to them
  • Comprehend the relationships among strategies.
  • Examine the prevalence of mental health concerns among college students in the U.S.
  • Name one frequently reported mental health concerns among U.S. college students
  • Identify systems that may support and detract from positive therapeutic outcomes for college students who are engaged in counseling.
