A Somatic Toolkit for Healing Anxiety

Title:
A Somatic Toolkit for Healing Anxiety
Presenter:
Crista Glover PhD, LPC, ACS
Description:
Cognitive behavioral therapy has been the gold standard in treating anxiety disorders for years. Research shows there is a strong connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and that challenging maladaptive beliefs goes a long way in alleviating the emotional distress. But what if anxiety does not merely reside in unhelpful thinking? When the physical symptoms of anxiety become pronounced, it can make the body itself feel unsafe and this type of suffering requires healing at the body level? This presentation offers a bottom-up somatic approach to healing. This presentation overviews the physical manifestations of severe anxiety, how they impact the sufferer’s physiology, and how the body can be used as the primary vehicle for healing. This presentation will explore research behind nervous system dysregulation and how to restore safety homeostasis through somatic techniques, nutrition, and embodied rituals, including but not limited to dance and movement, nutrition, and grounding in nature.

Global Wellness: Predicting Lower Levels of Anxiety

Title: Global Wellness: Predicting Lower Levels of Anxiety and Depression Severity

Author: Michael T. Kralkbrenner, PhD

Description: Global wellness: Predicting lower levels of anxiety and depression (Kalkbrenner, 2021) evaluates the construct validity for one of the only free inventories assessing global wellness in clients, the Lifestyle Practices and Health Consciousness Inventory (LPHCI), per the author, and examines the power of the instrument in predicting the severity of anxiety and depression; as well as whether there are differences in demographic variables in global wellness. This Continuing Professional Development resource provides counselors with a rationale for using wellness-based screening tools such as the LPHCI, information on how the psychometric properties of the LPHCI inform its administration and interpretation, and strategies for using the LPHCI to enhance the treatment planning for two of the most widespread mental health issues impacting adults in the United States: anxiety and depression.
