Therapeutic Community Substance Abuse Treatment with Incarce

Title:
Therapeutic Community Substance Abuse Treatment with Incarcerated Black Males
Presenter(s)/Author(s):
Otis Williams III, Marja Humphrey, Mark A. Bolden, Rachel Wagner
Description:
The Black population is still the most prevalent of all groups in prisons (Williams III et al., 2023). In 2019, a disproportionate number of Black males who were incarcerated had the offense of drug possession, trafficking, or other drug offenses or unspecified drug charges. However, Williams III et al. stated that despite the noted fact that Black males are disproportionately represented as drug-using offenders, few treatment models exist that are germane to this population. This CE addresses that need. The authors propose a pilot therapeutic intervention for counseling Black males with substance use disorders within the carceral system and offer specific considerations for counselors and future research.
Learning Objectives:
1.Understand and explain the proposed culture-specific therapeutic intervention for counseling Black males with substance use disorders within the carceral systems.
2.Comprehend the role and characteristics of the counselor in working with Black males with substance use disorders within the carceral systems.
3.Discuss considerations for counselors and future research.
