Latent Profiles of Counselor Burnout

Title:
Latent Profiles of Counselor Burnout: Associations with Self-Discrepancy
Authors:
Isak Kim, PhD; Donghun Lee, PhD, Janghee Lee, PhD; and Sang Min Lee, PhD
Description:
This article examines patterns of counselor burnout by identifying distinct burnout profiles and exploring how these profiles relate to counselors’ personal and professional self-discrepancies in key counselor qualities. Drawing on data from 360 practicing professional counselors, the authors identify four burnout profiles: Well-Adjusted Counselors (46.4%), Disconnected Counselors (18.9%), Impaired Counselors (6.1%), and Persevering Counselors (28.6%). The article discusses meaningful associations between burnout profiles and discrepancies in counselor qualities such as open-mindedness, stability, dependability, consistency, empathy, optimism, trustworthiness, and sociability. The authors highlight the importance of self-reflection and awareness of burnout profiles as a means of supporting counselor well-being and addressing factors that may contribute to burnout symptomatology.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learners will identify the four counselor burnout profiles (Well-Adjusted, Disconnected, Impaired, and Persevering) and describe their distinguishing characteristics.
  • Learners will examine the relationship between counselor burnout profiles and self-discrepancies in counselor qualities such as empathy, stability, dependability, and optimism.
  • Learners will apply strategies to recognize their own burnout profile in order to support counselor well-being and reduce burnout symptomatology.
