Posttraumatic Appraisals and Childhood Abuse in Complex PTSD

Title:
Posttraumatic Appraisals and Childhood Abuse in Complex PTSD
Authors:
Justin Watts PhD, LPC, CRC, NCC; Jaeyoung Kim, PhD; and Lindsey Warwick, PhD
Description:
This article examines the relationship between childhood psychological abuse (CPA), posttraumatic appraisals, and complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) symptom severity. Learners will review empirical findings demonstrating how fear, shame, self-blame, betrayal, anger, and alienation mediate the impact of early psychological abuse on later mental health outcomes. The article emphasizes assessment strategies and highlights practical skills to identify CPA-related trauma responses and implement trauma-informed counseling approaches that support recovery.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learners will broaden their professional perspective on who multicultural couples are and the significance of understanding cultural identity in effective marriage counseling with multicultural couples.
  • Learners will differentiate between PTSD and complex PTSD by describing at least two disturbances in self-organization (e.g., emotion dysregulation, negative self-concept, interpersonal difficulties).
  • Learners will explain the mediating role of posttraumatic appraisals in the relationship between CPA and CPTSD using research findings.
