Description:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely researched and utilized evidence-based approaches for treating anxiety and depression. However, traditional CBT models may not fully address the cultural values, beliefs, experiences, and contextual factors that influence mental health among diverse populations. This article examines findings from a comprehensive meta-analysis of 42 studies involving more than 4,100 participants that evaluated the effectiveness of culturally adapted cognitive behavioral therapy (CA-CBT) for anxiety and depression. Learners will explore common cultural adaptation strategies, review outcome data comparing CA-CBT to both control conditions and alternative treatments and examine implications for culturally responsive counseling practice. Emphasis will be placed on practical considerations for integrating culturally relevant interventions that support client engagement, treatment retention, and improved clinical outcomes across diverse populations.
