From Loss to Insight: Examining Refugee Mental Health

Title:
From Loss to Insight: Examining Refugee Mental Health through Ambiguous Loss Theory
Presenter:
Dania Fakhro, PhD, NCC
Description:
This on-demand video presents a study on the impact of ambiguous loss on refugees' mental health. Ambiguous loss, defined by uncertainty and lack of closure, is a significant yet under-studied aspect of trauma. This study aims to guide counselors in developing more effective interventions for refugees experiencing such loss. Ambiguous loss complicates the grieving process, often leading to misdiagnosis and overlooked symptoms. Despite its importance, it remains underrepresented in trauma and loss research (Boss, 2016). Boss (2006), the creator of ambiguous loss theory, highlights its traumatic nature and significant impact on mental health. This video specifically investigates how multiple ambiguous losses affect refugees' identity distress, trauma symptoms, and family functioning.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learners will learn the concept of ambiguous loss and its relevance to the refugee experience.
  • Learners will identify the mental health impacts of ambiguous loss on refugees, such as identity distress, trauma symptoms, and family functioning issues.
  • Learners will apply findings from the research to improve clinical practice with refugees and incorporate strategies that address the impact of ambiguous loss.
