Community Change Readiness and Substance Use

Title:
Community Change Readiness and Substance Use: How Counselors Can Initiate Systemic Change Throughout Their Communitiess
Presenter:
Natalie Ricciutti, PhD
Description:
Addiction counselors are often tasked with numerous roles; one of those being an advocate within and on behalf of their communities (ACA, 2014). These communities can be based on geographic location or by shared interests, values, or characteristics (i.e., communities of color, professional organizations, etc.; Kostadinov et al., 2015). One way to practice community-level advocacy is by assessing community change readiness toward systemic substance use (Oetting et al., 1995; Plested et al., 2016). Community readiness is the degree to which a community is ready to take action to change a wide-spread issue (Oetting et al., 1995) and is rooted in the Transtheoretical Model of Change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1982). In this presentation, attendees will learn about the concept of community readiness and an assessment tool to determine a baseline of readiness to change. Assessment findings can help practitioners create efforts that match the community’s change readiness. This offering is presented in collaboration with the ACA Division International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors (IAAOC).

Learning Objectives:

  • Learners will understand the key concepts and aims of community readiness for change.
  • Learners will identify the purposes and methods counselors can use to assess readiness for systemic change related to substance use in their communities.
  • Learners will conceptualize goals and needs for applying community readiness concepts and methods to community-wide change initiatives.
