Reaching Out vs. Lashing Out: Gender Differences in Response
Title:
Reaching Out vs. Lashing Out: Gender Differences in Responses to Bullying in High School
Presenter(s)/Author(s):
Rebecca M. Goldberg, PhD and Melanie Walsh, MS
Description:
This session focuses on recent relevant research conducted by the lead presenter examining high school bullying gender differences. This session focuses on recent relevant research in which we found that male students both experience and perpetrate significantly more physical bullying and experience more verbal bullying. Consistent with the tend-and-befriend model, girls choose prosocial responses significantly more than boys, whereas boys are just as likely to choose antisocial as prosocial responding.
Learning Objectives:
1.Attendees will experience the first overarching dimension of cultural competence as it relates to gender differences in bullying experiences and reactions for high school students: understanding one's own assumptions, values, and biases through self-evaluation and personal assessment.
2.Attendees will be exposed to the second overarching dimension of cultural competence as it relates to gender differences in bullying experiences and reactions in high school students: understanding the worldviews of culturally-different clients through listening to their stories and experiencing their cultures.
3.Attendees will discuss the third overarching dimension of cultural competence as it relates to gender differences in bullying experiences and reactions in high school students: developing culturally-sensitive appropriate and effective methods for each client and his/her individual needs based on context.
