Highlighting Grassroots Advocacy Efforts through Exploring

Title:
Highlighting Grassroots Advocacy Efforts through Exploring Findings from a Study of Mental Health Providers and LGBTGEQIAP+ Clients
Presenter:
Melanie Walsh, PhD
Description:
We explore results from our original mixed-methods research with mental health providers and LGBTGEQIAP+ clients. Findings illuminate client-reported traumatic experiences, microaggressions by providers, barriers to accessing treatment, and desired qualities in mental health providers. We cover findings based on provider responses related to knowledge and training, disclosure in therapy, and knowledge regarding referral sources.? Existing research highlights access issues including a lack of proficient providers, insensitivity exhibited by providers, and service expenses, as well as reluctance to engage in open communication with providers. Our findings further support previous research while offering new perspectives regarding barriers to access and insights into how LGBTGEQIAP+ clients select providers. We will examine therapist responses related to disclosure, training experiences, and knowledge of referral sources for LGBTGEQIAP+ clients. Finally, we will discuss counselor training and preparation to include results reported by service providers in this study as well as offer implications from our work.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand how LGBTGEQIAP+ clients find and select affirming therapists, as well as barriers to mental health therapy.
  • Participants will be able to describe issues facing therapists working with LGBTGEQIAP+ clients such as self-disclosure and referrals.
  • Participants will be able to explain grassroots organizing theory as it relates to community-based advocacy.
