Medicare and the Counseling Profession: 10 Things You Should Know
Presenter: Matthew Fullen, PhD, M.DIV, LPCC

In the first year of eligibility, over 60,000 licensed professionals enrolled as Medicare-approved providers. With Medicare covering over 60 million beneficiaries, enrolled providers have invaluable opportunities to enhance mental health accessibility for older adults and individuals with long-term disabilities. However, the Medicare program’s size and complexity present both professional opportunities and a need for counseling professionals to stay informed about recent developments. This session will explore the Medicare program's history, demographics, and politics, as well as implications for counselor professional identity and interprofessional collaboration.

  • Participants will describe the current status of Medicare provider enrollment in light of changes to federal law that went into effect in 2024.
  • Participants will analyze the relationship between counselor participation in the Medicare program and the evolution of counselor professional identity.
  • Participants will explain how changes to the Medicare program impact the counseling profession in regard to accreditation, specialization, and counselor training.
