Adventure therapy (AT) integrates experiential, often nature-based activities to engage clients cognitively, affectively, and behaviorally in the therapeutic process. This research article examines the effectiveness of adventure therapy for reducing symptoms associated with anxiety-related disorders. The meta-analysis synthesized 21 effect sizes from 12 studies representing 2,083 participants and found an overall moderate reduction in anxiety-related symptoms.
Learners will explore the foundations and applications of adventure therapy, research findings related to anxiety, PTSD, and other anxiety-related symptoms, and factors that may influence treatment outcomes. Particular attention is given to culturally responsive practice, practitioner training and credentialing, client screening, activity and environmental considerations, and the importance of appropriately trained counselors in designing and implementing adventure therapy interventions. The article also considers limitations in the existing research and identifies priorities for strengthening the evidence base for adventure therapy.
