Suicide: Identification, Intervention, and Prevention Skills

Title: Suicide: Identification, Intervention, and Prevention Skills Every Clinician Needs

Presenter: Rita Schulte, MA

Description: This presentation gives a comprehensive road map for navigating assessment, treatment, and management for those at risk for suicide. You will discover how to identify and name primary and secondary drivers that cause suicidal ideation using the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) and Dr. Thomas Joiner’s models. You will be able to assess how ruptures in attachment bonds, emotional dysregulation, a thwarted sense of belonging, and the inability to tolerate distress can lead to suicidal ideation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore current statistics on suicide and identify signs and symptoms that indicate suicidal ideation. List and describe 3 areas of impact vulnerability that set clients up for suicidal ideation: (Traumatized Brain, Guilt/Shame/Complex Trauma, Existential Shattering)
  • Be able to list and describe the CAMS Model for assessing, managing and treating primary and secondary drivers contributing to suicidal ideation, as well as how to incorporate other theoretical orientations and disciplines to accommodate a wide range of suicidal patients across treatment settings.
  • Explore a list of specific strategies that foster adaptation and resiliency, including somatic resourcing, remembered resources, art, writing and mindfulness
