Event Registration - Misophonia: What You Can Do to Help People with This Very Common Disorder

Misophonia is a newly defined and highly prevalent disorder (4.6% of adults in the US; Dixon et al.,. 2024) characterized by unusually strong aversive emotional (e.g., anxiety, anger) and behavioral (e.g., avoidance, escape, confrontation) responses to specific, repetitive, everyday sounds (Swedo et al., 2022). These are commonly oral (eating, chewing), nasal (sniffling), or throat (e.g., throat-clearing) sounds made by others, and often the triggering source for responses are parents, family members, and others close to the sufferer. Misophonia has been proposed for inclusion as a new diagnosis in the ICD-11 and scientific research has been rapidly evolving to understand its features and possible treatment approaches.
